If you NEED it cut shorter because it's in bad condition, then go with it but you can't let them make decisions for you. The last time I had my hair cut she cut it how she wanted to and I had to tell her that I thought it looked horrible. Your own instinct is always better than a strangers.

While a hairdresser is a trained professional and he/she probably is telling you to cut your hair shorter because he/she believes it would suit you better, the hair is yours and you have the final say. The hairdresser may also be telling you to cut it shorter because it is damaged. In this case, it would be a good thing to cut your hair because healthy hair looks better than unhealthy hair. Just talk to your professional and figure out why he/she believes you should cut your hair. If it is because your hair is damaged, then cut it off and then grow it out again. If it is because he/she thinks it would look better, do what you think is best. It is your hair after all.

I had hair nearly down to my bum before xmas and now it is above my shoulders!! I wanted a change but my hairdresser advised to go that short to release all the weight in my hair and it has worked. I find it easier to style and according to everyone it makes me look more grown up!

no = they are there to assist you with what you want - I have long hair, and despite the fact that it is a colour naturally which most people want to colour it to, I am always getting asked if I want it cut or highlighted. Once you have that done, you have to go back for retouches or re cuts - and you get dependent on their service. Only do it if it what you want - don't forget they are running a business.

it depends.. if they are telling you to cut it for style then you should decide if it's really YOUR style... but if they are telling you to cut it for the health of your hair (ie: split ends or damaged hair) then they are probably doing the right thing by reccomending a few inches off.

for the most part, hair dresses know what's the best haircut for each type of face. if you like your long hair and dont want to cut it, then dont. but sometimes it's nice to break out of the usual, and try something new. besides, im pretty sure that if your haridresser recommended you cut hair shorter it's probably bacause it'll look good.

no way! some hairdressers love the opportunity to work on longer hair, so they can try and do some grand, elaborate cut...but unless you're hair has a good few inches of split ends and damage, dont cut it off because they say so! xxx

A hairdresser may insist on a trim, but an actual haircut is all in your court on the decision of it.

Speaking from experience...absolutely not!!! If you've had long hair and it's something you don't mind, you've had it long for some time etc., and it's not damaged, then just trimming will be far easier to allow you to determine if you really do wish to have it cut shorter.

I had grown my hair out to just below my shoulders (I've had it as long as to my lower back at times). I went in just before the holidays for a hair cut, I have always cut my own hair but wanted a "treat" and when the cut I wanted went south on the hair dresser, she suggested I have it cut shorter...by the time she'd finished hacking it I had it up to my ears....she even had the friggin nerve to yell to all the other beauticians in the place..."Hey everyone, remember how long her hair was when she came in? Look at it now!"

Every day that I look in the mirror, wake up with bed head and can't do squat with it...I want to go back in time and make sure I never do something so stupid again! It will probably take me til mid summer to grow it out again and once that happens, a hairdresser will never get her scissors on it again.

You can always take more off....you can't put it back on once cut unless you go for the $1500 extensions...which I've been strongly considering ;)
